| Good writing is good thinking. Writing powers enable us to concentrate for a sustained period on a complex subject and come to a logical, rational conclusion, yet National Assessment of Education Progress reports tell us nearly three-fourths of our students cannot write proficiently. Not being able to write clearly is a sign of not being able to think clearly. Because people who cannot think clearly cannot discern what is foolish and wrong, they are easily misled and manipulated. As George Orwell said in Politics and the English Language, "the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts." — From Writing with Oomph and workshops by John Gile. |
